Opposition MPs, led by the Congress, held a protest march inside the Parliament complex on Friday, demanding a probe into the Adani issue. The MPs wore black masks with “Modi, Adani bhai-bhai” printed on them and carried copies of the Constitution.
Several leaders from the INDIA bloc parties, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, and Left parties, participated in the march, raising slogans against the Adani Group and its owner Gautam Adani.
However, the Trinamool Congress and the Samajwadi Party, who had not denounced Adani before, were absent from the protest. The absence has been interpreted by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a sign of division within the opposition bloc.
Among the protesters were Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the newly elected MP from Wayanad.
Priyanka Gandhi later claimed that the government was afraid of holding a discussion on the Adani issue.
“They don’t have the courage to discuss the Adani issue (in Parliament). Why is there a problem in discussion? Discussion happens in democracy only, they are afraid of it as well,” she said.
On Thursday, opposition MPs had protested outside the Makar Dwar of Parliament, wearing black jackets with slogans such as “Modi, Adani Ek Hai” and “Adani Safe Hai” on them.
They also called for a joint parliamentary probe into the Adani issue.
The Congress and other opposition parties have long demanded a probe by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) into the Adani Group, following the indictment of Adani and other company officials in a US court.
Congress leaders have argued that the indictment “vindicates” their demand for the JPC investigation into the “scams” involving the billionaire industrialist’s conglomerate. Rahul Gandhi has also called for Adani’s arrest.
The Adani Group has dismissed all such allegations as “baseless.”
