Opposition MPs on Monday walked out of the Rajya Sabha after the Chair refused to allow a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being undertaken in Bihar.
As the Upper House reconvened at 2 pm, BJD legislator Sasmit Patra, presiding over the session, informed members that the Business Advisory Committee had allotted three hours for the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025, and one hour for the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, once it is cleared by the Lok Sabha.
Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was then invited to introduce the Indian Ports Bill, 2025. He did so amid loud protests from the Opposition benches.
Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge rose to demand an immediate discussion on the SIR exercise, and was supported by several INDIA bloc MPs who raised slogans in the House. The Chair, however, declined to take up the matter.
The refusal sparked an uproar from Opposition members, who continued shouting slogans demanding a debate and subsequently staged a walkout.
Earlier in the day, the Rajya Sabha had been adjourned shortly after it met at 11 am when Opposition MPs protested the rejection of their 19 adjournment notices covering a range of issues.
