Pahalgam terror attack: 'Save my husband, please': Survivor’s cry echoes after terror attack on tourists

Tears streamed down her face as she clutched a stranger's arm, pleading for help. “Save my husband, please,” she begged, her voice trembling and choked with grief.

Just moments earlier, she had witnessed a gunman approach her husband during what was meant to be a peaceful day in the meadows of Pahalgam and shoot him at close range. Panic quickly spread around her as gunshots echoed through the valley, transforming a serene tourist outing into a nightmare.

In a tragic and shocking turn of events, gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists in the Baisaran meadow area of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday. One tourist was killed, and at least 12 others were injured in what authorities have confirmed to be a terror attack.

Eyewitnesses and survivors recounted that the assailants, dressed in Army-style fatigues, launched the attack without warning, targeting tourists who were enjoying the picturesque location. The victims were simply relaxing when the gunfire began.

The attack occurred at Baisaran meadow, a lush and scenic area about 5 km from the main Pahalgam hill station. Often referred to as "Mini Switzerland," the meadow is accessible only by foot or pony ride and is a popular spot for nature lovers and tourists.

Videos from the scene captured the horrifying aftermath: bloodied bodies on the ground, distraught survivors, and locals rushing to assist the injured. One woman, tending to a critically injured man, could be heard pleading, "Sir, please, please, please ask for help." Another survivor shared how a gunman accused her husband of not being a Muslim before shooting him.

Security forces quickly responded, securing the area and launching a search operation. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha issued a statement on X, directing local officials and healthcare teams to ensure immediate medical support. One critically injured tourist was airlifted to GMC Anantnag for treatment.

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti strongly condemned the attack, calling it a "cowardly act" and expressing deep concern for the safety of tourists in the region. She emphasised the need for a thorough investigation and urged authorities to take steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
