Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses a public rally during the foundation stone laying and inauguration of various development projects at Katra, in Reasi district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, terming it a direct assault on insaniyat (humanity) and Kashmiriyat (the cultural ethos of Kashmir). He stated that the attack was a deliberate attempt to ignite communal unrest in India and disrupt the peaceful lives of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking at an event in Katra, PM Modi said, “Pakistan attacked both humanity and the spirit of Kashmir in Pahalgam. Its objective was to provoke riots in India and undermine the livelihood of Kashmir’s hardworking citizens. That is precisely why the attackers targeted tourists.”

The Prime Minister applauded the resilience shown by the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the attack. He said that the local population’s response to the incident foiled Pakistan’s intentions and sent a powerful message globally. “The strength and unity demonstrated by the people of Jammu and Kashmir have not only exposed Pakistan’s conspiracy but have also sent a resounding message to terrorists across the world,” Modi remarked.

Highlighting the shifting mindset of the region’s youth, he added, “The young generation in Jammu and Kashmir today is determined to respond firmly to terrorism. This is the same terrorism that once burned down schools, destroyed hospitals, and shattered the dreams of generations in the Valley.”

The Pahalgam Terror Attack

The Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred on April 22 in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, claimed the lives of 26 people. The attackers specifically targeted male victims, many of whom were traveling with their families.

In the wake of the attack, tensions between India and Pakistan escalated sharply. On May 7, India launched a high-precision military operation dubbed Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The early morning strikes resulted in the destruction of nine terror camps and the deaths of at least 100 terrorists.

The escalation led to a fierce military exchange between the two nations. Between May 7 and 10, the western border witnessed a series of attacks and counterattacks involving airstrikes, drone operations, missiles, and intense artillery shelling.

One of the significant retaliatory actions occurred on the night of May 9-10, when the Indian Air Force carried out strikes on 13 Pakistani air bases and other key military targets. After four days of heightened conflict, hostilities between the two countries were de-escalated on May 10 following a mutual understanding.
