Parliament bans protests at gates after clashes between MPs

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has barred any dharnas or protests at Parliament gates. The directive follows a clash between BJP and opposition MPs, which resulted in injuries and an FIR against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

NDA and INDIA bloc members during a protest over Dr BR Ambedkar at Parliament premises, in New Delhi on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024.

In a decisive move aimed at maintaining order and ensuring smooth functioning, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday issued a strict directive prohibiting political parties, Members of Parliament (MPs), or any groups of MPs from holding dharnas or demonstrations at any gate of Parliament House.

The Speaker’s office confirmed that the ban extends to all gates of the building, emphasising that the directive was necessary to safeguard the sanctity of Parliament and prevent any disruptions to its proceedings.

"No member, group of members, or political parties shall hold any dharna or demonstration at any of the gates of Parliament House," the office informed.

Earlier, tensions flared when a confrontation between opposition and NDA MPs took place on the Parliament grounds, allegedly ignited by an insult to BR Ambedkar.

The BJP claimed that two of its MPs, Pratap Chandra Sarangi from Balasore, Odisha, and Mukesh Rajput from Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, were injured after opposition MPs allegedly pushed them during the protest.

Sarangi asserted that he was hurt when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi allegedly pushed a senior BJP member, causing Sarangi to fall.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly called the injured MPs, who were taken to RML Hospital, to check on their condition. Rajput is believed to be in the ICU.

Subsequently, Delhi Police filed an FIR against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others involved in the incident.

Gandhi was charged under multiple sections, including 117 (voluntary causing grievous hurt), 115 (voluntary causing hurt), and 125 (act of endangering life or personal safety).

In his response, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed the issue at a press conference.

We were peacefully protesting in a line, but they stopped us at the Makar Dwar gate.

To show their muscle power, they brought many male MPs. We had our female MPs with us, and they were also stopped,” Kharge stated.

He further argued that BJP MPs “forcefully attacked Congress leaders, causing me to lose my balance. I’m in no condition to push anyone. I couldn’t handle my balance, and I sat down. Now they are alleging we pushed them.”
