Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Indian women’s cricket team at his residence on Wednesday, congratulating the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side for their historic ICC Women’s ODI World Cup victory at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.
The PM praised the team’s remarkable comeback in the tournament, where they recovered from three consecutive defeats to clinch the title. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur recalled meeting the Prime Minister in 2017 without the trophy and expressed her delight in returning with the championship, joking that they hope to meet him more often now with the trophy in hand.
Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana described the PM as a source of motivation and inspiration, noting the broader impact of women excelling across fields today. All-rounder Deepti Sharma, who earned the Player of the Tournament award, said she had long awaited the meeting and recalled the PM’s words in 2017 urging the team to keep working hard to achieve their dreams.

During the event, discussions ranged from personal motivations to memorable moments on the field. The Prime Minister spoke about Deepti Sharma’s Instagram post featuring “Jai Shri Ram” and her Hanuman tattoo, which she said gives her strength. He also reminisced about Harleen Kaur’s celebrated 2021 catch against England and praised Amanjot Kaur’s decisive catch in the World Cup final.
The PM and the players also shared light moments, including Harmanpreet pocketing the match ball after the final and anecdotes highlighting the dedication and skill of the team.
