In what can address the long standing shortage of adequate MPs housing in the national capital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 184 newly constructed Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament (MPs) at Baba Kharak Singh Marg in New Delhi today. The project aims to provide spacious, modern, and eco-friendly residences with five bedrooms, dedicated office spaces, and rooms for support staff.

The inauguration of these state-of-the-art Type-VII flats marks a substantial step toward supporting India’s elected representatives by removing personal housing challenges, thereby allowing MPs to focus on governance and public service. This development reflects a governance priority centered on infrastructure modernisation and operational efficiency. The complex features green building technology, earthquake resistance, Divyangjan-friendly design, and amenities such as underground parking, community centres, and shops, ensuring MPs can focus fully on their public duties.

The new residential complex consists of four towers named Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hooghly, symbolising India’s great rivers that sustain millions. Each flat covers about 5,000 square feet, larger than previous MP residences, and includes office spaces for MPs and their assistants as well as accommodation for support staff.

“I had inaugurated the Common Central Secretariat on the Kartavya Path, Kartavya Bhawan, a few days ago. And today, I have got the opportunity to inaugurate the residential complex for my associates. The four towers, Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, Hooghly, named after India’s greatest rivers, which gives life to everyone, will inspire the lives of the public representatives, by filling them with a new wave of joy,” Prime Minister Modi said. Taking a swipe at his rivals, he said some people may link Kosi, the name of one of the four towers christened after different rivers, to the upcoming Bihar assembly polls but he will tell such "small-minded" people that the tradition of naming towers after rivers unites people.

Designed to meet National Building Code (NBC) 2016 standards and awarded a GRIHA 3-star green rating, the buildings incorporate energy-efficient and sustainable features. Key amenities include high-speed elevators, full power backup, modern fire safety systems, earthquake resistance, and facilities accessible to persons with disabilities (Divyangjan-friendly).

There is also underground parking for 500 vehicles and internal shops to meet daily needs. During the inauguration, PM Modi planted a Sindoor sapling, interacted with the ‘shramjeevis’ (construction workers), and expressed gratitude to all involved in the project.Prime Minister Modi underscored that before 2014, India witnessed no new MP residences, forcing parliamentarians, especially newcomers, to struggle with the acute shortage of housing in Delhi. Since 2014, more than 350 MP residences have been constructed, with the latest 184 flats designed to accommodate over 180 MPs under one roof.PM Modi highlighted the significant cost savings, noting that government expenditure on ad-hoc MP housing and rented office spaces was once exorbitant, with ministries alone paying nearly Rs 1,500 crore annually on rented premises.
