PM invited to G7 by Canada, looks forward to meeting leaders

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited on Friday by his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, to attend the upcoming G7 Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday confirmed his upcoming participation in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, later this month.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday confirmed that he will attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, later this month. The confirmation followed a formal invitation extended by Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, who recently came to power after a decisive victory in the country’s federal elections.

In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi wrote, “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark J Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month.”

This marks the first official interaction between PM Modi and Prime Minister Carney since the latter took office. The announcement has drawn particular attention, as it comes after weeks of speculation about whether Modi would attend the summit, given the strained diplomatic relations between India and Canada in recent months.

Just last month, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had twice stated that it had "no information" regarding the Prime Minister’s participation in the G7 Summit, fuelling speculation that he might skip the event due to ongoing tensions.

The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal forum of the world’s most industrialised democracies—France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States, and Canada. The European Union (EU) is also a participant. In addition, global institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the United Nations are regularly invited to attend the summit.

Ties between India and Canada soured significantly following the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023. The incident sparked a diplomatic row after then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly alleged that the Indian government had a role in Nijjar’s killing. India strongly denied the allegations, calling them “baseless” and politically motivated. The fallout led to expulsions of diplomats, freezing of trade talks, and a marked cooling of bilateral relations.

Modi’s confirmation of participation in the G7, despite these tensions, suggests a willingness to engage diplomatically on multilateral platforms, even as bilateral differences with Canada remain unresolved.
