Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹42,250 crore during visits to Silchar in Assam and Kolkata in West Bengal. The initiatives focus on high-speed roads, rail modernisation, agriculture, and port logistics, promising enhanced trade, employment, and regional integration under India’s Act East Policy.
Shillong-Silchar high-speed corridor foundation laid
In Silchar, PM Modi performed the bhoomi poojan for the ₹24,000-crore Shillong-Silchar High-Speed Corridor, the first access-controlled greenfield four-lane expressway in the Northeast. Spanning 166 kilometres, the project will link Assam with Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura, boosting industry, agriculture, tourism, and connectivity to Southeast Asia while transforming Barak Valley into a logistics hub.
Silchar Flyover and Rail electrification
The Prime Minister inaugurated the Silchar Town Flyover to ease urban traffic congestion and benefit students and residents near Silchar Medical College, NIT, and Assam University. He also dedicated the electrification of over 2,500 kilometres of Assam’s rail network, enabling faster, cleaner, and high-speed travel across the pristine Barak Valley region.

Patharkandi Agriculture College to empower youth
The PM laid the foundation stone for the region’s first Agriculture College at Patharkandi in Karimganj district. The facility will foster agricultural research, agri-startups, and skill development for local youth, positioning Barak Valley as a centre for modern farming studies.
Kharagpur-Moregram Expressway and NH projects advanced
In Kolkata, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones for national highway projects worth nearly ₹17,000 crore, including the 231-kilometre Kharagpur-Moregram Expressway and sections of NH-19 and NH-114. Covering over 420 kilometres in total, these works will cut travel time by seven to eight hours and accelerate economic activity across West Bengal and Jharkhand.
Rail stations redeveloped and Haldia Port mechanised
Six Amrit Bharat Stations — Kamakhyaguri, Anara, Tamluk, Haldia, Barabhum, and Siuri, have been redeveloped with Bengal’s cultural motifs. Modi flagged off the Purulia-Anand Vihar Terminal Express and inaugurated port upgrades, including mechanisation of Haldia Dock Complex, renovation of the Bascule Bridge, and cargo augmentation at Kidderpore, strengthening Eastern India’s trade and logistics ecosystem.
