Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the launch of a high-powered “demography mission”, warning that illegal infiltration posed a serious threat to India’s internal security, social harmony and national identity.

Delivering his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, the Prime Minister said the issue was not confined to isolated districts but involved a "well-thought-out conspiracy” to change the country’s demographic structure.

“I want to alert the country about a concern, a challenge. Under a well-thought-out conspiracy, the demography of the country is being changed. Seeds of a new crisis are being sown,” he said.

He warned that illegal intruders ("ghuspaithiya”) were “snatching the livelihood of the youth”, threatening women’s safety and misleading tribal communities in border areas. "This country will not tolerate this," he added.

The Prime Minister said the demography mission would function within a clearly defined timeframe to address what he described as “a grave crisis looming over India. No nation in the world can hand over its country to ‘ghuspaithiya’ then how can we hand over Bharat to them,” he said, adding that demographic shifts in the border regions could ultimately create a national security emergency.

He urged citizens to uphold the sacrifices of freedom fighters by refusing to accept activities that weaken the country. "Our ancestors gained freedom for us by making their supreme sacrifices. They gave us an independent India and it is our duty that we do not accept such activities. This will be our true tribute to them,” he added.

The Prime Minister had raised the issue of infiltration several times during the 2024 general election campaign, and the Bharatiya Janata Party has continued to highlight the influx of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in West Bengal, Jharkhand and Assam.

Opposition parties have, meanwhile, accused the BJP of using the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, and eventually in Bengal and Assam, to target minority communities.

West Bengal heads for Assembly elections next year, making the timing of the Prime Minister’s intervention politically significant.
