Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday praised the Indian armed forces for their successful precision strikes on terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), according to reports quoting official sources. The strikes were carried out under 'Operation Sindoor' in retaliation for the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.
The prime minister chaired a Union Cabinet meeting hours after the operation was launched. During the meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed the Cabinet about the successful execution of the operation. In response, the entire Cabinet expressed appreciation with a loud thumping of desks, applauding the armed forces' efforts and the prime minister’s leadership.
According to sources, PM Modi reiterated his government’s unwavering stance of zero tolerance towards terrorism. He also held a separate meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to assess the evolving security situation.
Early Wednesday morning, the Indian armed forces launched coordinated missile strikes on nine identified terror targets across Pakistan and PoK. The strikes targeted key strongholds of terrorist organisations, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad's base in Bahawalpur and the Lashkar-e-Taiba’s hub in Muridke. The action was in direct retaliation for the Pahalgam attack in which 26 civilians lost their lives.
PM Modi had previously granted full operational freedom to the armed forces, allowing them to choose the timing, manner, and targets of the retaliatory action.
Further details about Operation Sindoor were shared at a media briefing jointly addressed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. Wing Commander Singh said the operation aimed to deliver justice to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and their families.
“Nine terrorist camps were targeted and successfully destroyed,” said Wing Commander Singh, adding, “The locations were carefully selected to avoid any harm to civilian infrastructure or loss of civilian life.”
Colonel Qureshi presented video evidence of the strikes, including footage of the Muridke camp—where 2008 Mumbai terror attackers David Headley and Ajmal Kasab had received training. Other terror camps targeted included the Sarjal camp in Sialkot, Markaz Ahle Hadith, Barnala and Markaz Abbas in Kotli, and the Mehmoona Joya camp in Sialkot.
Foreign Secretary Misri described the Pahalgam attack as a brutal attempt to destabilize peace in Jammu and Kashmir. He revealed that the victims were killed at close range, often in front of family members, in a deliberate act to instill fear.
“The nature of the killings showed an intent to traumatise survivors and send a brutal message. It was clearly aimed at disrupting the return to normalcy in Kashmir,” Misri said.
