PM Modi returns after SCO Summit and key talks in China.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emplaned for New Delhi on Monday after concluding his two-day visit to China, where he held a series of significant meetings with world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

“Concluding a productive visit to China, where I attended the SCO Summit and interacted with various world leaders. Also emphasised India’s stand on key global issues. Thankful to President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government and people for the successful organisation of this Summit,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister took part in the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), held in Tianjin. The Summit featured discussions on the SCO development strategy, reforms in global governance, counter-terrorism measures, peace and security, economic and financial cooperation, and sustainable development.

On the sidelines of the Summit, Modi also held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, including space, trade, security and culture, and explored ways to further deepen the strategic partnership.

In his address at the Summit, Prime Minister Modi outlined India’s approach to enhancing cooperation within the SCO framework. He stressed three central pillars – Security, Connectivity and Opportunity – as the foundation for progress. Underscoring the importance of peace, security and stability, he called for firm and united efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms. Modi also highlighted the need for decisive measures to tackle terror financing and radicalisation.

Thanking member countries for their solidarity following the Pahalgam terror attack, Modi urged the grouping to reject double standards in dealing with terrorism and to hold accountable those countries that perpetrate and support cross-border terrorism.

The Prime Minister further underlined the significance of connectivity in fostering trust and development. He reiterated India’s strong support for projects such as Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor. He also pointed to opportunities in start-ups, innovation, youth empowerment and cultural cooperation, proposing the establishment of a Civilisational Dialogue Forum within the SCO to strengthen people-to-people ties.

Expressing support for the reform-driven agenda of the SCO, Modi welcomed the creation of centres to address organised crime, drug trafficking and cyber security. He called for a similar commitment to reforming multilateral institutions, including the United Nations.

Concluding his visit, the Prime Minister thanked President Xi Jinping for his warm hospitality and congratulated him on the successful organisation of the Summit. He also extended best wishes to Kyrgyzstan, which has assumed the next Presidency of the SCO.

At the close of the Summit, member countries adopted the Tianjin Declaration.
