Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday conveyed his condolences over the devastating earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan, stressing that India stands ready to extend all possible humanitarian aid and relief to the affected.

The powerful 6.0-magnitude tremor hit the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar late Sunday, flattening villages built of mud and stone, cutting off vital roads, and leaving widespread destruction. Taliban-run authorities have confirmed more than 600 fatalities and over 1,300 injuries, with officials warning that the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue in remote areas.

Expressing his anguish in a post on X, Modi said: “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this difficult hour, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid and relief to those affected.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also voiced solidarity with the Afghan people, assuring Indian assistance in the face of the crisis. “The devastating earthquake in Kunar Province of Afghanistan is a matter of deep concern. Express our support and solidarity to the Afghan people as they respond to it. India will extend assistance in this hour of need,” he posted.

Local reports identified Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi and Chapa Dara districts in Kunar as the worst-hit. In Nangarhar, at least nine deaths were reported. Entire hamlets were reduced to rubble while landslides and disrupted communication hampered rescue teams’ efforts. Helicopters and relief workers have been deployed, though difficult terrain continues to slow operations.

The tragedy highlights Afghanistan’s persistent vulnerability to seismic shocks, particularly in its mountainous and fragile terrain. The country has faced a series of deadly earthquakes in recent years, underscoring the urgent need for international assistance in bolstering its disaster response capacity.

Tremors were also felt across parts of Pakistan, though no major damage was reported there.
