Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a historic visit to Slovakia from June 14 to 16, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the Central European nation since it gained independence in 1993. The visit is expected to give fresh momentum to bilateral ties and strengthen India’s engagement with Europe.

The visit, announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday, will take place at the invitation of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. It forms part of Modi’s Europe tour, which will also include France and participation in the G7 Summit.

MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George described the trip as a landmark moment in India-Slovakia relations, noting that it comes at a time when bilateral cooperation is expanding across a range of sectors.

Prime Minister Modi will arrive in Bratislava on June 14 and receive a ceremonial welcome at the historic Bratislava Castle the following day. He is scheduled to hold both delegation-level and one-on-one talks with Fico, focusing on ways to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, defence, renewable energy, transportation and emerging technologies.

During the visit, Modi will also meet Slovak President Peter Pellegrini at the Presidential Palace, where a state banquet will be hosted in his honour.

India and Slovakia have steadily strengthened ties in recent years through high-level exchanges. President Droupadi Murmu visited Slovakia in 2025, while President Pellegrini travelled to India earlier this year to attend the AI Impact Summit.

According to the MEA, cooperation between the two countries spans trade and investment, defence, space, nuclear energy, cybersecurity, digitalisation, skill development and cultural exchanges. Bilateral trade has also witnessed positive growth, with officials expressing hope that progress on the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement will further boost economic engagement.

The Indian diaspora in Slovakia has grown to around 11,000 people and is now the country’s second-largest foreign community after Ukrainians.

Officials said the visit would provide an opportunity to review the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, expand economic partnerships and reinforce cooperation in multilateral forums. The trip is also expected to strengthen India’s broader outreach to Central Europe at a time of increasing geopolitical and economic engagement between India and the European Union.
