Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited Veer Bhumi in New Delhi on Wednesday and paid respects to her late father, the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, by offering floral tributes.
She was joined by her husband, Robert Vadra, and their son, Raihan Vadra. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and member of parliament P Chidambaram also honoured Rajiv Gandhi on the day of his birth. The Indian National Congress also honored the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, by posting a message on their official 'X' account.
"On the birth anniversary of the architect of modern India, 'Bharat Ratna' former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi ji, we offer countless salutations. On this Sadbhavana Divas, remembering Rajiv Gandhi ji's dreams, we reaffirm his resolve," INC wrote on 'X'.
In his message Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said, "Remembering former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary. As a visionary who dreamt of a modern India powered by youth and technology, he laid the foundation for the future we are building today. For me, Rajiv ji was more than a leader. He was a mentor who encouraged my early political journey and stood firmly by young leaders. His trust, vision, and guidance remain my greatest inspiration, and on this day, I bow to his memory with gratitude and a resolve to uphold his ideals."
Rajiv Gandhi started leading the Congress party in 1984 after his mother, who was also the Prime Minister, was assassinated. He became the youngest Prime Minister of India at 40 years old when he started his job in October 1984.
He was the Prime Minister of India until December 2, 1989. Rajiv Gandhi was born on August 20, 1944, and was killed by a suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election event in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on May 21, 1991.
During his time in power, India began modernizing its economy. He focused on advancing technology, improving telecommunications, and implementing reforms in education. Rajiv Gandhi was key in improving the country's technology systems. His vision played a key role in starting the growth of India's IT industry during the 1990s and continuing forward.
His government's computer and IT policy lowered import taxes on computers and software to help grow the IT sector. His government's policies supported the creation of the National Association of Software and Service Companies in 1988, which helped grow India's software industry. His government also pushed for teaching computer skills in schools and universities.
