The resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has sparked intense political debate, with Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi alleging that the move was a strategic ploy by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to evade a no-confidence defeat.
Taking to his official X handle, Gogoi remarked, "The resignation of N Biren Singh is not aimed to save the people of Manipur, but the BJP government in the state. Home Minister Amit Shah stepped in after knowing that BJP will lose the no-confidence motion. I don't think the BJP have any roadmap to return peace and normalcy to the state of Manipur. It is in the DNA of the party to put its own interests above the needs of the people."
Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi also criticised the resignation, attributing it to mounting public pressure and judicial scrutiny. "For nearly two years, BJP's CM Biren Singh instigated division in Manipur. PM Modi allowed him to continue despite the violence, loss of life, and the destruction of the idea of India in Manipur," he posted on X.
Gandhi further stated, "The resignation of CM Biren Singh shows that mounting public pressure, the SC investigation, and the no-confidence motion by the Congress have forced a reckoning."
Accompanied by BJP President A Sharda and party in-charge Sambit Patra, Singh submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan on Sunday.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the Central government in his resignation letter, stating, "I am extremely grateful to the Central government for timely actions, interventions, developmental work and implementation of various projects for safeguarding the interest of every single Manipuri."
He urged the Centre to maintain Manipur's territorial integrity, combat border infiltration, and sustain efforts against drug-related crimes.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, asserted that Singh's resignation was "long overdue." Speaking to reporters, she remarked, "It was long overdue...(For) two years, this has been carrying on in Manipur."
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who was in Prayag for the Mahakumbh, remarked on Singh's resignation, calling for peace and healing in Manipur.
Ethnic violence erupted in Manipur in May 2023 after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) following a High Court directive to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list.
The clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities have left over 250 people dead and thousands homeless. Singh's tenure had drawn severe criticism for his handling of the conflict.
