Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, expressed his disappointment with the unexpected results of the Haryana Assembly elections, stating that the Congress would take their complaints to the Election Commission (EC).
Addressing the public on Wednesday, Gandhi acknowledged that the outcome was unforeseen and that the party had received complaints from various constituencies, which they plan to raise with the EC.
While addressing supporters and party workers, Rahul Gandhi conveyed his gratitude to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, calling the victory of the INDIA alliance in the state a significant achievement for the country's democracy.
He noted that the triumph in Jammu and Kashmir symbolised a win for the Constitution and democratic self-respect. However, the unexpected loss in Haryana prompted a deep analysis of the party’s performance, and Gandhi promised that the Congress would continue to push for social and economic justice.
Gandhi also thanked the people of Haryana for their support and extended his appreciation to the party workers for their relentless efforts. He assured the public that the Congress party would keep fighting for their rights and truth, reiterating their commitment to raising the voices of the people across social and economic issues.
In contrast, BJP leader and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini attributed the BJP’s third consecutive victory in the Haryana State Assembly elections to the leadership and policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Saini emphasised that PM Modi’s governance over the past decade had led to the introduction of numerous policies and schemes benefiting various sections of society, including the poor, farmers, youth, and women. He credited Modi's leadership for earning the support and love of the people of Haryana, which ultimately led to the BJP’s success.
Saini also highlighted how the Congress party’s overconfidence, influenced by exit poll predictions, played a role in their defeat. The BJP’s victory, according to him, proved wrong the assumption that Congress would take power based on early surveys.
He pointed out that the BJP’s consistent work over the past decade, under PM Modi's guidance, helped the party secure the trust and votes of the people, even though many believed the Congress had an edge.
Saini expressed his satisfaction with his role in the victory, leaving the decision of further leadership appointments in the hands of the BJP’s parliamentary board and MLAs.
The Chief Minister also launched an attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), calling it a corrupt entity. He claimed that both AAP and Congress had an understanding during elections and accused them of only differing on the issue of seat distribution.
According to Saini, the two parties were united in previous elections and worked together in some areas, particularly during the Lok Sabha elections. His remarks were intended to emphasise that both Congress and AAP were plagued by corruption, in his view, and that voters saw them as similar in that regard. Saini expressed confidence that this realisation contributed to the BJP’s continued dominance in the state.
Despite Congress’s efforts, the party was unable to leverage the anti-incumbency sentiment that had been building over the BJP’s 10-year rule. The BJP managed to secure 48 out of 90 seats in the Haryana Assembly, while Congress, which had been hoping for a comeback, won 37 seats. Independent candidates claimed three seats, and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) secured two seats.
