Senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra exchanged their messages today on Buddha Purnima in connection with the lasting message of peace and nonviolence by Lord Buddha. The two leaders turned to the social networking site X and opined that Buddha’s teachings can prove to be an important guide for mankind in today’s ethical dilemmas.
According to Rahul Gandhi, the teachings and philosophy of Gautama Buddha are lessons for social harmony and honesty. He believes that the way of kindness and goodness shown by Buddha is still inspirational in our times. Similarly, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra highlighted the transformative power of affection, quoting the eternal truth that hatred can only be overcome by love. She remarked that Buddha’s commitment to kindness and humanity paved a global way toward prosperity and mutual respect.
Buddha Purnima, often referred to as Vesak, celebrates the birth of the founder of Buddhism. According to the lunar calendar, he was born on Shukla Purnima in the month of Baisakh. In a remarkable historical coincidence, it is believed that his birth, his attainment of enlightenment, and his eventual passing all occurred on the same date in different years. As the heir to the throne of his father King Suddhodhan and mother Queen Mayadevi, the prince went on to forsake his princely status at the age of 29 to embark upon a path towards discovering spiritual enlightenment, ultimately gaining worldwide recognition as the “Light of Asia.”
This event was officially recognised by the United Nations in 1999 as a tribute to the immense influence that Buddhism has exerted on humanity. This day is sometimes referred to as a “triple blessed” day as it celebrates the three most important events in Buddha’s life. On an annual basis, whenever the full moon appears between April and May, people gather in large numbers at the Mahabodhi temple of Bodh Gaya, Bihar to offer their respects at the place where Buddha’s quest ended.
