The Congress on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Centre over the NITI Aayog meeting, branding it an “exercise in hypocrisy and diversion” and mocking the think tank as an “‘Ayogya’ body”.
Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, criticised the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is expected to review progress under the Centre’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ initiative.
“What sort of Viksit Bharat will it be if those in power themselves destroy the bonds of social harmony by their malicious words and deeds?” Ramesh asked in a post on social media platform X.
In a detailed tirade, he continued, “What sort of Viksit Bharat will it be if those in power subvert Parliament, judiciary, universities, media, and Constitutional and statutory authorities to fulfil their nefarious goals? What sort of Viksit Bharat will it be if the values that India always stood for are systematically assaulted in full glare of the world?”

Ramesh further posed: “What sort of Viksit Bharat will it be with sharpening economic disparities and inequalities even as wealth continues to accumulate in the hands of a few? What sort of Viksit Bharat will it be if India’s glorious diversities are deliberately sought to be insulted and erased? What sort of Viksit Bharat is it where not only is freedom of speech under threat but freedom after speech is also endangered?”
Describing the NITI Aayog as an “Ayogya body if ever there was one”, he asserted the meeting was “yet another exercise in hypocrisy and diversion”.
Meanwhile, an official statement said the meeting would focus on state-led growth to achieve the goal of a developed India by 2047. The theme is ‘Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat@2047’. It is the first major meeting between the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers since Operation Sindoor.
“In line with his commitment to take all the states together as ‘Team India’ for a Viksit Bharat, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will chair the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog on May 24, 2025,” the statement noted.
The concept encourages states to draw up bold, long-term vision documents tailored to their unique conditions and aligned with national priorities. These visions, it added, “must include time-bound targets” and focus on “human development, economic growth, sustainability, technology, and governance reforms”.
