Amid the recent foreign media reports about the resolution in the United Nations General Assembly regarding the Kashmir issue, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that it was an annual resolution tabled by Pakistan in the third committee.
The resolution did not mention the Jammu and Kashmir issue and was passed without a vote during the session.
“We have also analysed the misleading reports from the foreign international media about the resolution in UNGA. This is the annual resolution tabled by the Pakistani side in the third committee,” informed MEA sources.
Both Asian neighbours have accused each other of violating human rights on several occasions, with Jammu and Kashmir in India and Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan being the areas of special focus.
It's pertinent to mention that both regions in India and Pakistan have been affected by terror-related violence for the past 4 decades.
The Third Committee of the General Assembly, at its seventy-ninth session, is chaired by Zephyrin Maniratanga, Permanent Representative of Burundi.
Like previous sessions, a crucial part of the work of the committee will focus on the examination of human rights questions, including reports of the special procedures of the Human Rights Council, which was established in 2006.
The Committee will hear and interact with special UN rapporteurs, independent experts, rights activists, and also the chairs of treaty bodies and working groups as mandated by the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly.
The committee also discusses queries about the advancement of women, the protection of vulnerable groups like children issues Indigenous to societies, the treatment of refugees, and the promotion of fundamental rights by eliminating racism and race discrimination, and the right to self-determination.
The committee also takes into account the importance of social development such as youth, family, ageing, persons with disabilities, crime prevention, criminal justice, and international drug control.
