The Supreme Court declined to grant Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal temporary bail in a corruption case brought by the CBI in connection with the alleged excise policy scam.

A panel of judges comprising justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan served a notice to the CBI regarding Kejriwal's petition against the Delhi High Court's decision upholding his arrest by the investigative agency.

"We are not granting any interim bail. We will issue notice," the bench told senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, who was appearing for Kejriwal.

The matter has been posted for hearing on August 23.

The Delhi High Court deemed the chief minister's arrest lawful on August 5, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not act maliciously. The court found that the AAP leader had the ability to influence witnesses, who only came forward to testify after his arrest.

Following a CBI investigation ordered by the Delhi lieutenant governor, the excise policy was revoked in 2022 due to suspected irregularities and corruption in its development and implementation.

The CBI and the ED alleged that modifications to the excise policy were carried out improperly and that license holders were granted undue favours.
