Supreme Court to Review Kejriwal’s Arrest Challenge.

The Supreme Court is set to hear Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail plea on Wednesday, August 14. This plea challenges his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the ongoing excise policy case. The case will be reviewed by a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had dismissed Kejriwal’s petition contesting his arrest, directing him to seek bail from the trial court. The High Court noted that the prosecution had carefully gathered evidence, respecting Kejriwal's position, and conducted extensive investigations across India. These investigations were aimed at uncovering the full scope of the alleged conspiracy involving multiple individuals.

In his petition to the High Court, Kejriwal argued that his arrest was a result of “gross persecution and harassment” motivated by extraneous factors. He highlighted his role as the Chief Minister and National Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party, asserting that the case against him is politically driven.

Previously, the Supreme Court had granted Kejriwal interim bail in a money laundering case on July 12, following his regular bail granted by the trial court on June 20.

The Rouse Avenue Court recently gave the CBI an additional 15 days to obtain necessary sanctions for prosecuting individuals in the excise scam case. The court also postponed the hearing on the CBI’s chargesheet against Kejriwal to August 27.

The adjournment follows the CBI’s request for more time to secure sanctions from the government. The agency filed its final charge sheet on July 28, naming Kejriwal as one of the key figures in the alleged excise scam.
