With less than 24 hours to go before the Delhi Assembly elections, the city's police force has ramped up its security measures to ensure a smooth and peaceful voting process.

In the lead-up to the election on February 5, authorities are focusing on strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which governs election campaigns and activities, to maintain fairness and order during the polls.

Special CP Devesh Chandra Srivastava of the Special Crime Branch addressed the media on Tuesday, providing an update on the steps taken by the police in the past 24 hours.

He revealed that 25 First Information Reports (FIRs) had been filed in relation to MCC violations, with 14 proclaimed offenders apprehended. These arrests come as part of a broader effort to curb illegal activities that could disrupt the election process.

Srivastava further elaborated on the extensive preparations that had been underway even before the MCC came into effect. "We have been gearing up for this moment well in advance, with all election-related materials and teams ready for polling day," he said.

The police have been working diligently to prevent any disturbances that might arise as election day draws nearer, with particular attention paid to sensitive areas that are prone to incidents.

A key part of the security operations in the city has been the arrest of individuals involved in various unlawful activities. Over the past 24 hours alone, police have detained 340 people under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), a set of regulations designed to ensure public safety.

Of these arrests, 278 people were apprehended for consuming alcohol in public places, highlighting the authorities' focus on maintaining discipline during this crucial period.

In addition to these arrests, authorities have seized significant amounts of illegal cash and liquor. A sum of Rs 12.58 lakh was confiscated, and 1,835 litres of liquor were recovered.

This forms part of the police's wider crackdown on the illegal distribution of alcohol during elections, a common issue that undermines the integrity of the voting process. Seven illegal arms were also seized, underscoring the police's efforts to curb potential violence ahead of the polls.

As part of the increased security measures, the Delhi Police conducted flag marches across vulnerable areas on Monday evening.

Notably, both the Govindpuri and Hauz Rani regions saw large-scale displays of security presence, with law enforcement walking the streets to reassure the public and discourage any unlawful activities. These marches are a standard measure used to maintain order and send a clear message that the authorities are fully prepared for the election.

The South district police have also increased their patrols and implemented intensive checks in sensitive locations.

DCP Chauhan, speaking to the media, confirmed that route marches had been conducted in several vulnerable areas. "With less than 48 hours to go, we are taking no chances," he said, referring to the heightened surveillance and readiness of police personnel.

The Delhi Assembly election, which will take place in a single phase on February 5, has sparked considerable political activity in the capital. With the election nearing, the final day of campaigning has seen a surge in rallies and roadshows.

The authorities are working tirelessly to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that all voters can cast their ballots without fear of disruption.

The counting of votes is scheduled to take place on February 8, and until then, the police force will continue to monitor the situation closely.
