Severe flood warning across India, Yamuna to touch 206m in Delhi

The CWC has warned of severe flooding across multiple states and said the Yamuna in Delhi could reach 206m by Tuesday, as heavy rain swells key rivers and reservoirs across India.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) on Monday warned of widespread flooding across the country, with several states already facing severe conditions and the Yamuna in Delhi expected to rise to 206 metres by early Tuesday morning.

According to the commission’s daily report, 15 monitoring stations, six each in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and one each in Delhi, Jharkhand and West Bengal, are currently in the “severe flood situation” category. An additional 34 stations across Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and West Bengal are witnessing above-normal flooding.

In Delhi, the Yamuna at the Old Railway Bridge continues to flow above the danger mark and is on a rising trend. The CWC listed several vulnerable areas including Karawal Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Kotwali, Civil Lines and Defence Colony, as well as villages such as Burari, Pur Shahdara, Badarpur and Sabhapur.

Severe rainfall and rising river levels have also raised flood risks in southern and western states. In Karnataka, extremely heavy rain is forecast for both coastal and interior districts, potentially pushing rivers such as the Netravathi, Kumaradhara and Varada above safe levels.

In Kerala, rivers including the Kabini, Valapattanam and Chandragiri are expected to rise, while west-flowing rivers in Maharashtra, such as the Damanganga and Vashishti, are already rising alongside the Krishna and Godavari basins.

Telangana remains on high alert as heavy inflows are expected into major reservoirs such as Nizamsagar, Sriramsagar and Kanthampally in the Godavari basin. Andhra Pradesh is bracing for very heavy rainfall from a low-pressure system, which may lead to swelling of the Musi, Maneru and Paleru rivers.

Flood alerts are also in place for Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, where multiple rivers are currently above warning or danger levels.

The CWC has advised dam authorities in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat to follow prescribed reservoir operating procedures and issue advance notices before releasing water. In the Cauvery basin, dams such as Krishnarajasagar, Hemavathi, Kabini and Mettur are near full capacity, prompting calls for coordinated releases to avoid flooding downstream.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has warned of moderate flash flood risks in North Interior Karnataka, Telangana, Konkan and Goa and parts of Maharashtra, with low to moderate risks for Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and Marathwada.
