The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that heat wave, severe heat wave, and warm night conditions are expected to persist for the next two to three days, especially over parts of western and northern Rajasthan. According to the IMD, the highest maximum temperature was recorded in Sri Ganganagar, where the mercury soared to a scorching 47.8 degrees Celsius.

Speaking to national media, Radhey Shyam Sharma, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur, said, “In the last 24 hours, the temperature has increased by 1–2°C in many areas across Rajasthan. Heat waves, severe heat waves, and warm night conditions are likely to continue for the next 2–3 days, particularly in the western and northern parts of the state. The highest temperature reported was 47.8°C in Sri Ganganagar.”

Sharma added that pre-monsoon activity is expected to begin in some areas of the state after the next 24 to 48 hours. "Monsoon activity has already intensified in the last couple of days. Conditions are becoming favourable for its advancement into parts of eastern and central India. In Rajasthan, we expect pre-monsoon activity in some eastern regions starting from June 15. This will likely lead to a temperature drop of 2–4°C,” he said.

The IMD, in a bulletin issued on Thursday, stated that a gradual relief from the intense heatwave conditions could be expected across Northwest India starting June 14.

Currently, severe heatwave conditions are being reported in several locations in West Rajasthan, with some isolated areas experiencing extreme temperatures. Heatwave conditions are also prevailing across parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, isolated pockets of East Rajasthan, southern Uttar Pradesh, and northwest Madhya Pradesh.

In its temperature forecast, the IMD said no significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over northwest and central India during the next three days, but a gradual decline of 2–4°C can be expected thereafter.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, IMD official Radhey Shyam Sharma reported that western Rajasthan, particularly the districts of Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, and Bikaner, were experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures crossing 47°C. He said these conditions are expected to last for three to four days.

“Strong south-western winds carrying dust will prevail in this region for the next two to three days. Thunderstorm activity is expected to develop in eastern Rajasthan between June 15 and 16, which may bring relief from the ongoing heat. Due to these thunderstorms, a further dip in temperatures is likely between June 18 and 20,” Sharma added.

On June 10, the IMD issued an orange alert for Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh districts, warning residents of the severe heat. Yellow alerts were also issued for Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Alwar, Bharatpur, Karauli, and Dholpur districts, indicating the likelihood of high temperatures and heatwave conditions in these areas.
