Thailand will launch its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for Indian nationals on January 1, 2025. This move aims to simplify visa applications and streamline the entry process for Indian travellers.
However, the 60-day visa exemption for Indian passport holders for tourism and short business purposes will continue until further notice.
In an official notification, the Thai Embassy announced that all non-Thai nationals, including Indian citizens, must apply for visas through the online portal https://www.thaievisa.go.th.
Applications can be submitted either personally or through a representative.
The Embassy confirmed that the system would offer offline payment options, with specific details to be shared by the embassy and its consulates. It also clarified that visa fees would be non-refundable, regardless of the application’s outcome.
The new system promises a processing time of approximately 14 working days from the date of receipt of the visa fee.
The ETA will allow a single entry and enable visitors to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days, with an option to extend their stay by 30 days if required.
For Indian citizens seeking regular visas under the current system, applications for ordinary passports must be submitted to designated visa processing agencies by December 16.
Diplomatic and official passport applications must be submitted to the embassy or consulate-general by December 24.
The ETA system will allow travellers to use automated immigration gates at checkpoints, enabling faster clearance. Travellers can scan the QR code on their ETA to expedite the immigration process.
Additionally, the new system will track the stays of visa-exempt nationals to ensure compliance with the authorised duration of stay. Those who overstay their permitted period may face penalties, including daily fines.
