At least six pilgrims were killed after being run over by a speeding train at Chunar railway station in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday morning, officials said.

According to officials, the victims had just alighted from a train and were attempting to cross the railway tracks when another train approaching on the adjacent line hit them. The impact was so severe that the bodies were badly mutilated.

The incident occurred at around 9.15 a.m., and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.

Mirzapur GRP Inspector Raghavendra Singh said the pilgrims had arrived from Sonbhadra by the Prayagraj–Barwadih passenger train. They were heading towards Varanasi and were trying to cross from one platform to another when the Kalka Mail crossed the station at high speed, leading to the tragedy.

Eyewitnesses said the victims were returning to Dakshinanchal after taking a holy dip in the Ganga. Panic and chaos ensued at the station as people rushed to help. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel reached the spot and launched rescue and relief operations.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep grief over the accident and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He directed officials to ensure immediate relief, provide the best possible medical care to the injured, and deploy SDRF and NDRF teams if required.

The Chief Minister also instructed senior officials to visit the site and oversee rescue and relief efforts. Officials said the situation at Chunar station has now been brought under control, though rescue operations continue.

Meanwhile, the death toll from Tuesday’s train accident near Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh has risen to eleven, officials confirmed on Wednesday. Several passengers remain hospitalised.

The collision near Bilaspur involved a goods train and a mainline electric multiple unit (MEMU) local train, which derailed multiple coaches and severely damaged signalling systems, disrupting rail traffic on the Bilaspur–Katni route.

Authorities said relief operations are continuing at both sites, and senior officials are supervising efforts to restore normal rail services.
