Tear gas from Ranchi police drill hospitalises students.

In a case of sheer negligence by Ranchi Police, students of a government middle school near Ranchi Police Line in Jharkhand had a harrowing experience on Saturday morning when the smoke from tear gas reached their classrooms.

A mock drill was being conducted to prepare for emergency situations during the upcoming festivals, in which tear gas shells were being fired. The gas somehow reached the school, causing chaos at the Government Middle School, Police Line, on Saturday morning.

The children's eyes started burning due to the smoke entering the school. Many students experienced difficulty in breathing, and some even fainted.

A dozen children were rushed to Sadar Hospital, Ranchi. Most of them were sent home after receiving primary treatment. At present, two girls remain admitted to the hospital.

The school’s principal, Dr Jyotsna Prasad, said that there was suddenly a loud explosion, and within moments, the smell of tear gas spread through the classrooms. She added that the condition of both girls is now stable.

Everyone began experiencing discomfort, and all the children were immediately evacuated from the classrooms. Meanwhile, when a second explosion occurred, police arrived at the police line adjacent to the school campus.

As soon as the information was received, an ambulance was dispatched to the school by the police. Ranchi's BJP MLA, C.P. Singh, also visited Sadar Hospital to inquire about the students' health.

He stated that the police should not have been so negligent, as conducting a mock drill next to a school is highly inappropriate. He suggested that the police should conduct such exercises in areas away from densely populated locations.

City SP Rajkumar Mehta said that all necessary safety standards were followed during the mock drill. However, due to sudden strong winds, the tear gas spread to the school campus.

He explained that the windows of the classrooms on the upper floor were open, which allowed the gas to enter. He assured that all children are now safe and stated that they had not anticipated the gas reaching a school located approximately 100 metres away from the drill site.
