In a major political development, veteran leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy on Monday resigned from both the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and his position as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, triggering fresh turmoil within the party at a politically sensitive time.

Announcing his decision to the media, Roy stated, “I have resigned from my position as a Rajya Sabha MP. At the same time, I have also resigned from the party.”

His departure comes in the aftermath of the party’s disappointing performance in the recent Assembly elections, a period during which internal dissent and speculation about factionalism have been steadily mounting. Roy’s resignation is being viewed by political observers as a significant blow to the party’s leadership.

Soon after stepping down, Roy launched a scathing attack on the party’s internal functioning and leadership. He alleged that despite the electoral setback, there had been no attempt within the party to introspect or analyse the reasons behind its failure.

Criticising what he described as a deviation from the party’s founding ideals, Roy claimed that public trust in the party had eroded. “The connection between the party and the grassroots has been completely severed. The original agenda was to bring change in Bengal by ousting the CPI(M), but over time, corruption has become institutionalised within the party,” he said.

In a sharp warning to the leadership, Roy remarked that any administration that fails to heed the voice of the people is bound to face downfall. He further raised serious concerns about the financial transparency of the party’s top leaders, demanding a comprehensive audit of their sources of wealth.

Roy also reiterated his dissent over the controversial RG Kar Hospital incident, a stance that had earlier placed him at odds with the party’s official position. Recalling his independent protest, he said he had spoken out because the public demanded justice, and the incident had sparked widespread outrage.

Political analysts believe that the rift between Roy and the party leadership, which began during the RG Kar episode, has now reached a breaking point. His exit, coupled with his pointed allegations, has intensified discussions about internal divisions within the TMC and added to the challenges facing the party in the current political landscape.

With tensions already high within the party ranks, Roy’s resignation is likely to deepen the ongoing crisis and could have far-reaching implications for the TMC in the coming months.
