Families, supporters and residents across Karur gathered on Sunday to mark the first anniversary of the stampede that claimed 41 lives, with memorial events held in remembrance of the victims.

 

The tragedy took place on September 27, 2025, at Velusamypuram in Karur district during a political rally addressed by then TVK chief C Joseph Vijay. More than 100 people were injured in the crowd crush, which also claimed the lives of children.

 

The Supreme Court later ordered the investigation to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The probe remains in progress, continuing to keep the incident in public focus across Tamil Nadu.

 

Investigative proceedings were temporarily suspended in March during the Assembly election process and resumed in June. Investigators subsequently questioned police personnel deployed for security at the rally. Statements and accounts have also been examined from victims, witnesses, police officials, medical personnel and other individuals linked to the incident.

 

Legal proceedings have also followed the tragedy. In July, the Madras High Court set aside the Tamil Nadu government's decision to offer government jobs to relatives of the 41 victims, citing constitutional principles related to equality and public employment. The Supreme Court stayed that order in August, leaving the matter under judicial consideration.

 

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK leader Vijay visited Karur in July, his first trip to the district after assuming office as Chief Minister. During the visit, he met the victims' families and announced plans to establish a memorial for those who died in the stampede.

 

In another development in July, the Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea seeking restrictions on Vijay and other TVK leaders from meeting the victims' families or making public comments about the tragedy. The court noted that the CBI investigation was already underway.

 

With the circumstances of the incident still being examined, September 27 remains a day of remembrance and grief for the families of the 41 victims, who continue to await the outcome of the probe.
