Taylor Swift's ₹4.8 cr engagement ring sparks Andhra origin buzz

Experts highlight the ring's old mine cut, which emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries when India was the world's major source of diamonds, specifically from the known Golconda region of present-day Andhra Pradesh.

This is no ordinary off-the-shelf ring. Kelce co-designed the piece with New York-based jeweller Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry.

The news of Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce’s engagement has sent the internet into a frenzy. While fans are weighing in on the relationship milestone, the true showstopper is Swift's dazzling engagement ring, which has certainly captivated admirers worldwide.

The centre stone of the ring is a stunning old mine brilliant diamond, sometimes described as an elongated antique cushion, and is estimated to weigh between 7 and 10 carats. Set in 18k yellow gold with intricate hand-engraved details, the piece is, reportedly, valued at around ₹4.8 crore ($550,000).

This is no ordinary off-the-shelf ring. Kelce co-designed the piece with New York-based jeweller Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry. Its vintage style — romantic, timeless, and steeped in history — feels distinctly "Swift-coded". Experts highlight the old mine cut's unique charm, which features 58 facets, a high crown, a small table, and a signature large culet.

What is making the ring even more intriguing is its potential link to India.

The "old mine" cut emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries when India was the world's major source of diamonds, specifically from the known Golconda region of present-day Andhra Pradesh. For almost 2,000 years, stones from the Godavari and Krishna valleys dominated the world market for diamonds.

Golconda diamonds were renowned for their unparalleled brightness and purity. Famous stones such as the Koh-i-Noor and the Hope Diamond were mined from these sites before being exported to Europe.

Because of this history, any vintage cushion or antique old mine stone automatically raises whispers of a Golconda origin. Although the style and timeline of Swift's ring align with this hypothesis, it is not confirmed without a provenance certificate or archived document.

Nonetheless, Taylor Swift’s ring is undeniably vintage, romantic, and worth a small fortune. And its possible Indian origin adds another layer of mystique to Swift's new chapter.
