Thousands of fans gathered at Chennai airport on Monday to welcome Gukesh Dommaraju, who returned home from Singapore after winning the World Chess Championship.
At just 18-years-old, Gukesh became only the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand, to win this prestigious title.
Gukesh was welcomed by officials from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and students from Velammal Vidyalaya, a well-known chess school in the city.
“I am very happy to be here. I can feel the support and what it means for India... You guys are amazing. You gave me so much energy,” Gukesh said while speaking to the media outside the airport.
As he left the airport, Gukesh was greeted with garlands and surrounded by excited fans who wanted to see the new World Chess Champion. Officials from the All India Chess Federation were also there to congratulate him.
The celebration included dancers and students holding banners to honor the young Grandmaster. SDAT officials gave Gukesh a shawl as a token of appreciation for his achievement.
A special car, decorated with photos of Gukesh and the slogan “18 at 18,” was waiting at the airport to take him home. Gukesh became the 18th undisputed World Chess Champion, defeating China’s Ding Liren in a 14-game match.
Gukesh won the final game on December 12 after Ding made a mistake in the endgame.
