Three extremists were killed in an encounter between the district police force and the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) extremist organisation in the forest area under Ghaghra police station in Gumla district of Jharkhand on Saturday morning.
After the encounter, police recovered an AK-47 and an INSAS weapon from the site. The identity of the three extremists has not yet been established, but police are working to identify them.
Police have intensified the search operation following the encounter, but due to heavy rain, they are facing difficulties in the forest, said sources.
Gumla Superintendent of Police Haris Bin Zaman is leading the search operation.
The encounter took place after the SP received information about a large number of JJMP extremists gathering in the forest and hills of Sehal.
Sources said that upon seeing the police, the extremists opened fire, forcing the security personnel to retaliate. During the crossfire, three extremists were killed.
Police said that the extremists were preparing to carry out a major incident, but their plan was foiled. They added that JJMP extremists are still hiding in the jungle. A large number of police personnel have cordoned off the area to arrest them.
On the instructions of the SP, police personnel from Gumla, Ghaghra, Chainpur and Bishunpur police stations have cordoned off the area from all sides and are conducting raids.
