Jagdeep Dhankhar is set to vacate the Vice President’s residence soon, with sources revealing that the former Vice President began packing on the very night he tendered his resignation, although his resignation was officially accepted only yesterday.
According to sources, several opposition party leaders had sought appointments to meet with Dhankhar after news of his resignation surfaced, but he was unable to accommodate these requests.
Notably, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut and Sharad Pawar both requested meetings with Dhankhar yesterday, but neither could secure a time slot.
Dhankhar, 74, who assumed office in August 2022, was set to serve as Vice President until 2027. He moved into the newly built Vice President Enclave on Church Road, near the Parliament House Complex, in April last year.
The Vice President's Enclave, which houses both the Vice President’s residence and office, was developed under the Central Vista redevelopment project.
Having resided there for nearly 15 months, the former Vice President will now have to vacate the premises.
Dhankhar stepped down from his position on Monday, citing health concerns as the reason for his resignation. However, the grand old Congress party responded on Tuesday by suggesting that the real reasons behind VP's resignation do run much deeper than the health issues he cited, and some members might have proof for the same as well.
His unexpected resignation has sparked widespread speculation over whether there are other underlying factors at play beyond his stated priority of healthcare.
This sudden move came at the end of a day of surprising developments in the Rajya Sabha under Dhankhar’s leadership, catching the government off guard and pushing it into damage-control mode.
