The strike, attracting over 30 crore workers, as claimed by the organisers, is likely to have significant effects on daily life in the country.

The country appears set for disruptions as a coalition of central trade unions, accompanied by various farmer organisations, has announced plans for a strike, or Bharat Bandh, on February 12. The strike, attracting over 30 crore workers, as claimed by the organisers, is likely to have significant effects on daily life in the country.

A joint platform of ten central trade unions, including the Confederation of Indian Trade Unions, All India Trade Union Congress, and Indian National Trade Union Congress, announced that they were going ahead with the plans as a protest against the Centre's labour reforms.

Union leaders say the new labour codes take away many key protections, giving employers too much flexibility in hiring and firing, and that this will compromise job security. The participation of farmer organisations is considered to add a major thrust to this strike as well.

While hospitals, medical centers, airports, and individual offices are considered to be operational during this strike, citizens have been advised to get prepared for a situation when markets will be closed, there could be disturbances in public transport services owing to a potential blockade of roads, and government offices and public sector banks could be closed.
