Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and ‘One Nation, One Election’ remain unfinished agendas of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that “serious discussions” are underway and “positive strides” have been made on both fronts.

Virtually addressing an event marking the BJP’s 47th Foundation Day, PM Modi said the party’s mission to reshape governance and policy frameworks remains ongoing.

“Our mission is still ongoing. On Uniform Civil Code, ‘One Nation, One Election’ and other issues, serious discussions are taking place in the country, and we have achieved tremendous progress on those fronts,” he said.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the BJP-led government is committed to implementing the Women’s Reservation Act, which provides 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, by the 2029 general elections. He noted that the BJP had first raised the issue of women’s reservation in 1994.

Targeting the Congress, Modi said BJP workers had endured hardships, including the Emergency and “oppression”, and even sacrificed their lives in states such as West Bengal and Kerala, “where violence has been turned into a political culture”.

Highlighting the party’s governance record, he listed key initiatives, including the scrapping of “hundreds of black laws” from the British era, the construction of the new Parliament building, 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker sections, the ban on triple talaq, the Citizenship Amendment Act, and the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

On electoral reforms, Modi explained that ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposes simultaneous polls for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, while the UCC seeks a uniform set of laws governing personal matters such as marriage and adoption, irrespective of religion.

Referring to global developments, he said India continues to be guided by the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” even during times of conflict, while strengthening ties with countries across the world.

Modi also underlined the BJP’s vision of building a developed and self-reliant India, asserting that the party’s governance model is rooted in stability and “nation first” principles.

He said the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which has completed 25 years, remains an inclusive coalition prioritising regional aspirations, and credited the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for shaping the party’s ideological foundation.

The BJP, founded on April 6, 1980, continues to work towards what Modi described as a “Viksit Bharat”, driven by grassroots workers and long-term policy goals.
