Udaygiri, Himgiri: Stealth frigates to be commissioned by Navy

Udaygiri is the stealthy, capable, indigenous, and Udaygiri and Himgiri are generations ahead of previous platforms.

The Indian Navy will commission two advanced stealth frigates, Udaygiri (F35) and Himgiri (F34).


Indian Navy is set to increase its fleet with the induction of two stealth frigates Udaygiri (F35) and Himgiri (F34). The commission of the two state-of-the-art will take place on August 26.
 
The Indian Navy marks this as a significant milestone achieved in naval modernisation and in its commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
 
“On 26 August 2025, the Indian Navy will simultaneously commission two state-of-the-art stealth frigates, Udaygiri (F35) and Himgiri (F34), in Visakhapatnam. This historic event marks a significant milestone in India's naval modernisation, showcasing the nation's capability to design and construct sophisticated warships from multiple shipyards,” wrote Navy,i in a post on its official X account.
 
“This achievement underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing and highlights the success of the make in india initiative, generating employment for thousands and supporting over 200 MSMEs,” the post added.  
 
 
Specifications:
Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Udaygiri (F35) is the second ship of the Project 17A stealth frigates, and the 100th ship designed by the Navy's Warship Design Bureau. On the other hand, Himgiri is the first of P17A ships being constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers GRSE.  
 
In another significant achievement for the Indian Navy, Udaygiri is the stealthy, capable, indigenous, and Udaygiri and Himgiri are generations ahead of previous platforms. Displacing approximately 6700 tons, the P17A frigates are about five percent larger than the previous Shivalik class frigates and even have a smaller radar cross section and a cleaner hull design.

“They are powered by Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion plants using diesel engines and gas turbines that drive controllable-pitch propellers and are managed through an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS). The weapon suite includes supersonic Surface-to-Surface Missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles, 76 mm MR Gun and a combination of 30 mm and 12.7 mm Close-in Weapon Systems and the Anti-submarine/ Underwater weapon systems,” the Indian Navy added.
 
Both vessels are a product of an industrial ecosystem of over 200 MSMEs, which provide roughly 4,000 direct jobs and more than 10,000 indirect jobs.
 
The commissioning of Udaygiri and Himgiri is a proud milestone for self-reliance and marks the commitment of the Navy for self-reliant ship design and construction and continues the work of the commissioning of other indigenous platforms, such as destroyer INS Surat, frigate INS Nilgiri, submarine INS Vaghsheer, ASW Shallow Water Craft INS Arnala, and Diving Support Vessel INS Nistar, all in 2025.
