Desilting of Vishwamitri River to reduce flood risks.

The city of Vadodara has started taking crucial flood prevention measures by deepening and widening the Vishwamitri River and carrying out desilting operations.

Alongside this, work has also begun on increasing the depth of Ajwa and Pratappura reservoirs, which play a vital role in water management.

In a significant move, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has ensured that no financial burden will be placed on the municipality for these projects.

The excavation is being carried out through public participation, allowing interested parties to collect the extracted soil free of charge. This innovative approach not only reduces costs but also ensures efficient utilisation of resources.

The Mines and Minerals Department has approved the plan, enabling quick execution. Authorities have invited applications from interested parties who wish to collect the excavated soil, with the deadline set for February 27.

This initiative is expected to prevent future flooding in Vadodara while also ensuring financial sustainability.

Last year, Vadodara witnessed severe flooding, which left residents stranded in waterlogged homes for days. In response to the crisis, the state government conducted a comprehensive survey under the guidance of water expert B.N. Navalawala.

The findings were presented to the Chief Minister, and after receiving approval, the necessary flood prevention measures have now commenced.

The Vishwamitri River, which flows through the heart of Vadodara, has suffered from excessive silt accumulation and encroachments over the years.

These issues have made the river more prone to overflowing during heavy rainfall, leading to repeated instances of flooding. By desilting and widening the river, authorities aim to restore its natural flow and improve its capacity to carry excess water, reducing the risk of waterlogging in residential areas.

Ajwa Reservoir, one of the city’s primary sources of drinking water, has also been facing challenges due to sediment buildup. Over time, the accumulation of silt has reduced its storage capacity, affecting the city’s water supply, particularly during the summer months.

The deepening of Ajwa is expected to enhance its ability to retain water, ensuring a steady supply for residents while also serving as a protective buffer against floods.

Similarly, Pratappura Reservoir plays a crucial role in agricultural irrigation and groundwater recharge in the region. However, silt accumulation has significantly impacted its capacity.

The deepening process will rejuvenate the reservoir, improving water availability for farmers and strengthening the overall water management system in Vadodara.
