Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who lost his life in the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad, will be accorded a state funeral with full honours on Monday. The Gujarat government has declared a one-day state mourning in his memory as a mark of respect.

Rupani's remains were identified three days after the tragic accident through DNA testing. A large team of forensic experts has been deployed to carry out the meticulous and emotionally challenging task of identifying the victims of what is being described as one of India’s worst aviation disasters. The identification process involves matching DNA samples collected from the victims' remains with those of their close relatives, using a highly complex and time-consuming medical and legal procedure.

This verification process includes several layers of analysis and can take up to 72 hours. In cases where DNA material is insufficient or degraded, the analysis is repeated to ensure accuracy. Only after conclusive identification are families informed and asked to come forward to claim the remains of their loved ones.
