Opposition to Govt: Waqf Bill Won’t See the Light of Day.

The opposition parties have unanimously decided to oppose the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament, with members of the INDIA bloc set to vote against its passage on Wednesday.

The decision was finalised at a meeting attended by all opposition leaders on Tuesday evening.

Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) MP NK Premachandran confirmed the opposition’s stance, stating that they will actively participate in the discussion and strongly resist the bill’s passage. He emphasised that the opposition has been against the bill at every stage.

The Waqf Amendment Bill, which aims to improve the management of waqf properties in India, will be tabled in the Lok Sabha for debate and passage. The government has allocated eight hours for discussion, as announced by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju.

Opposition leaders have criticised the bill, calling it unconstitutional. When the government introduced it last year, it was sent to a joint parliamentary committee for review.

Following the committee’s recommendations, the Cabinet approved certain modifications. However, the opposition remains firm in its objections.

The Congress has issued a whip to all its Lok Sabha MPs, directing them to be present in the House for the next three days to ensure coordinated resistance against the bill. With strong opposition expected, the debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill is likely to be a heated one.
