Tensions remain high in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, as a warehouse was set on fire in the Koyla Bakhal area despite a strong police presence. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, adding to the unrest that has gripped the town in recent days.
According to officials, the warehouse belonged to businessman Sandeep Chauhan and contained stocks of pan masala and cosmetic products. The fire resulted in significant losses, with goods worth millions of rupees destroyed.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause and identify those responsible.
Deputy Inspector General (Indore) Nimish Agrawal confirmed the incident and assured that no perpetrators would be spared. He stated that the police would thoroughly examine the nature of the materials stored in the facility.
Sandeep Chauhan ruled out the possibility of an electrical short circuit, as the warehouse had no power connection for several years.
The situation in Mhow has been tense since Sunday, following communal clashes triggered by stone-pelting on a rally celebrating India's victory in the Champions Trophy.
The violence led to the deployment of nearly 1,000 police officers, including members of the Rapid Action Force (RAF), to restore order. So far, 14 people have been arrested in connection with the disturbances.
With Holi celebrations approaching, police have intensified security measures to prevent further incidents. Authorities have confirmed that "Holika Dahan" rituals will take place at 20 different locations in the town.
Drones are being used to monitor sensitive areas, while search operations and security checkpoints have been established in high-risk zones.
On Wednesday evening, police conducted a flag march through key areas, including Mhow, Patti Bazar, and Kotwali, as a deterrent against further unrest.
Meanwhile, local MLA Usha Thakur has urged Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to take strict action against those responsible for Sunday’s violence.
She demanded that compensation for the losses, including damage to over 10 vehicles and the burning of four shops, be recovered from the arrested individuals and provided to the affected parties. Thakur also alleged that the incidents were part of a premeditated conspiracy.
