The Congress on Thursday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he met with the Kapoor family to discuss the Raj Kapoor Film Festival, while allegedly avoiding a visit to Manipur, a state beset by ethnic violence since the month of May, last year.
The Kapoor family, including Bollywood stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, and others, had met the Prime Minister on Wednesday to extend an invitation for the Raj Kapoor Film Festival, which marks the 100th birth anniversary of the iconic actor and filmmaker.
In response to the meeting, Congress leader Pawan Khera took a jibe at the Prime Minister, saying, “We said Manipur, he thought Kareena Kapoor.”
The comment highlighted the stark contrast between Modi’s engagement with the Kapoor family and his absence in the violence-ravaged northeastern state.
The Kapoor family, including Kareena Kapoor and her husband Saif Ali Khan, shared several photos from their meeting with the Prime Minister. In one picture, Modi is seen signing an autograph for Kareena’s children, Taimur and Jeh.
The Congress’ swipe is the latest in a series of criticisms aimed at the Prime Minister for not visiting Manipur, a state that has been rocked by ethnic violence since May 2023.
The violence, which has claimed over 200 lives, erupted following a “Tribal Solidarity March” in protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
Ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities have left thousands homeless and fuelled widespread instability in the state.
