The day commemorates the birth of Sage Ved Vyasa, the author of the Mahabharata and one of the greatest Hindu gurus. It's a day to celebrate the guru's role in enlightenment, wisdom transmission, and the eradication of ignorance. In Hinduism, the guru -- often mistaken for God -- is considered a conduit to divine knowledge.

On this day in the past, Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon, marking the start of the Buddhist monastic tradition. It honors the first disciple of Lord Mahavira being accepted into Jainism. Celebrations include rituals like blessing-seeking, gift-giving, and guru puja (worship).
Students respect their teachers by touching their feet, but spiritual adherents may fast or meditate to deepen their relationship.
