65% back INDIA bloc continuation, Rahul Gandhi top choice

Despite internal conflicts and electoral challenges, 65% of respondents in the Mood of the Nation survey supported the continuation of the INDIA bloc, with Rahul Gandhi emerging as the preferred leader to head the opposition bloc, receiving 24% support.

Leader of several opposition parties, including Congress, AAP, Samajwadi Party, JMM and others.

A recent Mood of the Nation survey revealed that 65 per cent of voters believe the opposition parties should continue with the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), despite recent challenges, including setbacks in elections and internal divisions.

However, 26 per cent of respondents advocated for dissolving the alliance.

The survey, conducted from January 2 to February 9, 2025, involved 1,25,123 voters across all Lok Sabha segments, incorporating both new interviews and long-term tracking data.

Rahul Gandhi leads as preferred leader

When asked about the most suitable leader to head the INDIA bloc, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi emerged as the frontrunner, securing 24 per cent support. He was followed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who garnered 14 per cent backing.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav trailed behind with 9 per cent and 6 per cent support, respectively.

Forecast for Lok Sabha elections

The same survey also provided insights into the potential outcomes of upcoming Lok Sabha elections. If elections were held today, the Congress-led INDIA bloc, which secured 232 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is projected to see its tally fall to 188 seats.

In contrast, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is predicted to make significant gains, potentially winning 343 seats. The BJP alone could secure a simple majority, with an estimated 281 seats. This would mark a substantial shift in the political landscape.

NDA and INDIA bloc vote share projections

According to the survey, the NDA is expected to increase its vote share by three percentage points, reaching 47 per cent. Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc is predicted to see only a modest increase of 1 per cent, reflecting its declining momentum, particularly in states like Maharashtra, Haryana, and Delhi.

This shift has been attributed to a combination of electoral setbacks and internal discord within the opposition alliance.
