BJP slams Kharge for 'irresponsible' remark on PM Modi

Ravi Shankar Prasad said Kharge has joined the ranks of his party leaders who make controversial statements on national security, rather than reining them in.

The BJP strongly criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for his recent remarks suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi canceled his trip to Jammu and Kashmir due to an adverse intelligence report received just days before the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.

The BJP called Kharge’s comment irresponsible, especially considering the sensitive context of rising tensions with Pakistan.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, a senior BJP leader and former Union minister, responded by accusing Kharge of joining a growing list of Congress leaders who make controversial statements about national security, instead of reining in such remarks. He questioned the inconsistency in Kharge's statements, highlighting the contradiction between his public statements and his party’s actions.

Prasad pointed out that Kharge had, on one hand, expressed solidarity with the nation during an all-party meeting, yet on the other hand, was making statements that could potentially weaken the country’s position.

Kharge had alleged during a public meeting in Ranchi that Prime Minister Modi canceled his planned visit to Jammu and Kashmir after receiving an intelligence report warning of security threats just three days before the Pahalgam attack.

He claimed that the intelligence report was the reason for the cancellation, but questioned why additional forces weren’t sent to safeguard the tourists in the region if the security situation was so concerning.

Prasad strongly disagreed with this assertion, calling it a highly irresponsible remark coming from the president of the principal opposition party. He expressed disappointment over Kharge’s comments, especially at a time when the nation was uniting in preparation for a nationwide mock drill, which was meant to raise public awareness and enhance emergency preparedness.

The BJP leader emphasised that such comments only added to the difficulties in the already complex situation with Pakistan and undermined national unity. He urged political leaders to avoid making statements that could harm the country’s security interests.
