The Madras High Court on Tuesday, December 19, convicted Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy and his wife P Visalatchi in a disproportionate assets case. The minister has been asked to appear before the court on December 21, Thursday.
On June 28, a principal sessions court in Vellore acquitted Ponmudy and his wife in the disproportionate assets case stating that the prosecution failed to produce sufficient evidence. The Madras High Court has now reversed the trial court decision and the sentence will be pronounced later in the week.
The Madras High Court took suo motu cognizance in August to review the acquittal of Tamil Nadu Minister and his wife in the disproportionate assets case after their initial acquittal by the Vellore court in June.
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) case against Ponmudy and his wife was registered in 2002 when the then AIADMK government was in power from 1996-2001, wherein it was alleged that the duo had an income of Rs 1.4 crore which was disproportionate to their known sources of income at the time.
The DVAC claimed that Ponmudy amassed illegal wealth during his stint as a minister in the state government from 1996-2001.
