Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday made a strong criticism against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led NDA government. He accused them of trying to 'steal votes of the poor' by conducting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
At a rally in Araria during the ongoing ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’, Gandhi claimed that the SIR process was a 'systematic way to take votes,' and he said this was being done with the support of the Election Commission. He said, "The Narendra Modi government, after privatising public sector units, now wants to take votes from the poor through the SIR with the help of the Election Commission."

A top Congress leader strongly criticised the poll body, calling it an 'election omission' rather than the Election Commission. He said the action was against the constitution and was meant to take away the voice of people from weaker groups before the Bihar assembly elections.
The INDIA bloc will not let this happen in Bihar. The Constitution ensures that all citizens in the country have equal rights… the SIR goes against the Constitution. People from Bihar will respond properly to the BJP and its allies in the assembly elections," Gandhi said. Besides problems related to elections, Gandhi also criticised the Modi government for closing off all job opportunities for the poor and young people.
He mentioned that after big changes in the public sector through privatisation, the government is now focusing on democratic rights. The 1,300-km 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' started on August 17 from Sasaram and is planned to visit more than 20 districts within 16 days. It will end with a large rally in Patna on September 1.
