Indian star batsman and Border-Gavaskar-winning captain Ajinkya Rahane on Thursday announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect. He said it was time for him to move on in life and put cricket behind him for the betterment of his career.
The 38-year-old batter represented the country in 85 Tests, 90 One Day Internationals and 20 T20 Internationals for India in a career that began in 2013. However, he has not played for the country since the 2023 Test series against West Indies.
“Today, I feel the timing is right for me to move on and announce my retirement from international cricket and all formats,” Rahane said in a post on X.
Even though he has remained out of the Indian selection committee’s radar, he has been actively playing and participating in the domestic circuit and captained Mumbai in the 2024-25 season.
Across all international formats for India, Rahane played 195 matches, scoring 8,414 runs at an average of 35.95, with 15 centuries and 51 fifties.
Following India's infamous 36 all-out collapse in Adelaide, Rahane took over as captain in Virat Kohli’s absence.
He scored a legendary counter-attacking century at Melbourne to level the series and famously guided an injury-depleted young Indian side to an extraordinary 2–1 series victory, breaching Australia's fortress at the Gabba.
