India are now assured of a third medal at the Archery World Cup Stage 1 after the compound mixed team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Rishabh Yadav secured a place in the final by overcoming Slovenia here on Friday.
The fifth-seeded Indian pair, who qualified based on their combined scores, made a confident start, defeating Spain 156-149 in the round of 16. They then edged past Denmark 156-154 in the quarter-finals, before registering a clinical 159-155 win over Slovenia in the semi-final.
Their remarkable performance has come close on the heels of compound archery being added to the programme for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, offering renewed hope and motivation to Indian archers.
Jyothi and Rishabh will now face Chinese Taipei in the gold medal match scheduled for Saturday.
This success follows an impressive outing by the Indian men’s recurve team on Thursday. Despite arriving just hours before the competition due to visa delays, Dhiraj Bommadevara showcased exceptional resolve and composure to guide India into the final.
Alongside seasoned archers Tarundeep Rai and Atanu Das, Dhiraj helped the fifth-seeded Indian side defeat Spain 6-2 to seal their place in Sunday’s final against third-seeded China. The effort has assured India of their second medal at the ongoing tournament.
India had already opened their medal account with a bronze from the compound men’s team event on Wednesday.
With finals lined up across multiple categories, India’s contingent looks poised for a strong finish at the season’s first Archery World Cup outing.
