Army lift third straight Khelo India Winter Games title

In the second phase in Gulmarg, athletes from across the country competed in skiing and snowboarding events, and the Army dominated, securing eight of their nine gold medals during this phase.

The top performers from the army included Armyman Mayank Panwar, who won double gold in slalom, and Himachal Pradesh's Preeti Thakur, who also won double gold in snowboarding. 


The Khelo India Winter Games 2026, which concluded in Gulmarg on Thursday, saw the Indian Army defend their team championship title for the third consecutive year, finishing at the top of the medal table with 23 medals, including 9 gold, 6 silver, and 8 bronze. 

 

In the second phase in Gulmarg, athletes from across the country competed in skiing and snowboarding events, and the Army dominated, securing eight of their nine gold medals during this phase. 

 

Final Medals Tally – KIWG 2026 (Gulmarg/Leh)

 

Indian Army: 9 gold, 6 silver, 8 bronze (total: 23)

 

Himachal Pradesh: 6 gold, 7 silver, 1 bronze (total: 14)

 

Haryana: 4 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze (total: 7)

 

Maharashtra: 3 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze (total: 12)

 

Ladakh: 2 gold, 5 silver, 6 bronze (total: 13) Army’s dominant run in the games continued in the Nordic (cross-country) events, including a 1-2-3 finish in the 15km Nordic race.

 

The top performers from the army included Armyman Mayank Panwar, who won double gold in slalom, and Himachal Pradesh's Preeti Thakur, who also won double gold in snowboarding. 

 

Meanwhile, the hosts Jammu and Kashmir secured their first gold medal of the 2026 Winter Games in the men’s giant slalom snowboarding event.

Earlier, Phase 1 of the games was held in Leh from January 20 to 26, which focused on ice hockey and skating, where local athletes shone brighter with some stellar performances. 

 

Skarma Tsultim (Ladakh) was among the top performers in Phase 1 of the annual Khelo India Winter Games.
